Jikoni’s in Kampala feels like that rare kind of restaurant you want to “keep to yourself”… right up until you bring your friends along and end up recommending it anyway. It sits in a great location—easy to get to, easy to meet up at—and once you walk in, it opens up into a space that’s wonderfully unbothered: ample seating, good flow, and the kind of setup that works whether you’re slipping in for a casual meal or settling down for a proper evening.

The ambiance is the sweet spot. Warm without trying too hard, stylish but still grounded, and comfortable in a way that makes you relax almost immediately. It’s the kind of place where conversations stretch, laughter lingers, and you don’t feel rushed to “wrap it up” the moment your plates are cleared.

Now, the food. My friends and I shared a Chicken Luwombo, and it was the kind of dish that quietly steals the show—comforting, richly flavoured, and deeply satisfying. But what really pulled everything together were the sides: plenty of them, all tasty, and generous enough that sharing felt like an experience rather than a compromise. It’s the sort of spread that makes you look at the table and think, yes, this is exactly how we should be eating.

If you’re in Kampala and you want a delicious, approachable introduction to Ugandan cuisine—served in a setting that feels both relaxed and elevated—Jikoni’s makes it easy. Come hungry, come with company, and don’t be surprised if it becomes one of your repeat spots.

Fast and friendly service. Very responsive and polite! Although pricey, you should try the buffet. I wouldn't say it's value for money though?! But it's great.

A great restaurant with good local food. Good food, good portions, good service, good ambiance. Enough parking for a number of cars, with stewards who are quite helpful. However, the place had too many flies when we visited. & it took forever to bring candles, which didn't help much anyway. They can do a bit better with that.

So my friend took me to try Luwombo, a traditional Ugandan dish. I found the meat steamed in banana leaves quite interesting, but to be honest, there was far too much fat on it for my taste — and I couldn’t even tell whether it was goat or beef. Next time, I think I’d go for the chicken version instead.
The plate with rice, potatoes, bananas, and cassava, paired with beans and peanut sauce, was an incredible experience — rich, earthy, and unlike anything I’ve had before.
Unfortunately, the service really let the place down. I asked for the bill three times with no result. In the end, I had to walk up to the reception desk and wait there just to pay.
